Thursday 8th October – Relaxing start, sightsee then bike ***** - sunny
– Pont de Duzen to Arras sur Rhone via Tournon and Tain l’Hermitage –
22.34 miles, 21 mph max and out 3 hrs 45 mins :)
Lovely blue sky morning looking down on the town. Did exercises outside and
we were all on our own until about 10 when a group of Japanese tourists
got out of a mini bus, swarmed round the van and started to take photos of
the view with our yoga mat and chairs in the shot! We left about 11 and
went down into Tain l’Hermitage, took photos in the square of the
fountains and visited the tourist information. Drove across the bridge
into Tournon sur Rhone and parked to have a walk round their old streets
and over the old bridge. Walked to where the river cruise boat was filling
up with 3 coaches of new guests. Drove off on our planned route up the
Doux valley towards the gorges and just before the Duzon bridge we parked
up, packed our lunch and got the bikes off. Had to change one of my pedals
for the new ones bought at the Casino Geant yesterday. We cycled across
the bridge and down into the hamlet, crossing back across the river on the
old bridge which is only open to local cars now. Biked on down into
Tournon and noticed as we passed that the river cruise had already left!
Over the bridge and along the East bank of the River Rhone and left Tain
l’Hermitage on the main road. We soon cut back towards the river and
past lots of orchards of apple, apricot and cherry trees. Crossed the
river at the Gervans Barrage we saw yesterday from the Belvedere. The
river splits off here into the real river and the canal so for a
considerable way we biked along the island until we arrived at Arras sur
Rhone. We sat near the barrage taking us back to the west bank and ate our
lunch. The Rhone cycle path runs along this side so we followed that back
to Tournon passing many more fruit orchards and even a walnut tree with a
few stray ones underneath which we collected for later. We ate our snack
on the point where the Doux river enters the Rhone and watched a barge sail
down and a cruise ship sail up. Biked back up the road alongside the Doux
past the Ardeche steam train station which runs trips through the Gorges to
Lamastre. Back at the van we had a cuppa and a rest before having pork for
tea. By looking at the maps and books we picked up at the tourist
information we have discovered that a walk to the Cuves du Duzon which is
apparently a natural wonder and ‘giant’s cauldron’! Must
investigate that tomorrow as the walk leaves from exactly where we are
parked.
